Arthur Hahnloser

Arthur Hahnloser (born April 12, 1870 in Winterthur ; † May 17, 1936 in Cannes ) was a Swiss ophthalmologist and art collector .

Life

Hahnloser was born the son of a textile merchant and his wife. In 1898 he married Hedy Bühler (1873–1952), a craftsperson and art collector. His son Hans R. Hahnloser (1899–1974) became an art historian.

After graduating from high school in 1889 , he studied medicine in Zurich, Lausanne and Heidelberg and completed training as an ophthalmologist in Zurich, Vienna, London and Utrecht. In 1896 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD. In 1898 he settled in Winterthur and opened a practice with a clinic in the Villa Flora . In 1907 he moved to the private hospital in Winterthur.

Hahnloser built a large collection of Swiss and French art of the 19th and 20th centuries. Century. From 1907 he was a board member of the Kunstverein Winterthur. He maintained close contacts with the artist group Nabis and with representatives of Fauvism (including Henri Matisse , Pierre Bonnard , Henri Manguin , Aristide Maillol , Félix Vallotton , Edouard Vuillard and Ker-Xavier Roussel ). In 1980 part of his collection went to a foundation. Since 1995 his works belong to the inventory of the art museum Villa Flora in Winterthur.
