B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West Berlin 1979–1989 is an essay film that brings together the West Berlin avant-garde scene, the squatter scene and the beginnings of the early Love Parade to form a plot around the protagonist Mark Reeder . It consists of documentary film material from the 1980s and is connected by newly filmed scenes with a historical look. The premiere took place as part of the Berlinale 2015 in the “Panorama” section. It opened in theaters on May 21, 2015.

Mark Reeder lives in Manchester , is a music nerd, works in a record store and is a musician in the punk scene. Inspired by the musical influence of German bands like Kraftwerk , Neu! , Tangerine Dream u. a. At the end of the 1970s he moved to an occupied house in West Berlin and immersed himself in the avant-garde, music and squatter scene there. He gets to know important people and bands of the genius amateur scene like Gudrun Gut , Blixa Bargeld and Die Tödliche Doris . You can see him partying in locations like Risk , Jungle and SO36 . Shipowner is shown doing different activities, working as a sound engineer for Mania D or Malaria! , for Die Toten Hosen , as a voice actor for porn films, as an actor for Jörg Buttgereit's splatter films - for which Reeder benefits from his uniform fetish, as a musician (among others in the new wave band Shark Vegas ) and as a TV journalist for a British broadcaster. He later brought Nick Cave to West Berlin and organized a Tote Hosen concert as part of a blues fair in East Berlin. At the end the first Love Parade and WestBam can be seen, Mark Reeder appears as the owner of the label MFS , which publishes electronic music.

The film does not only refer to one scene, but shows the development of pop culture from New Wave and other (electronic) styles from the 80s to techno . Certain scenes do not appear in the film, such as B. the developments of Disco and Hi-NRG , because no film material from these areas was available.

Stylistic devices

In contrast to the usual film documentaries on pop culture- historical topics that report collage-like, B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West Berlin 1979-1989 is an essay film. Mark Reeder not only plays the role of the first-person narrator , but also that of the 'experience'. The film has a strongly narrative structure with a radically subjective narrative style: Mark Reeder's story of his move to and his life in West Berlin is told by himself and is 'covered' with corresponding film recordings from this period. In addition, the 2014 film uses game scenes shot by Miriam Dehne in which Marius Weber portrays the young Mark Reeder. Reeder conducts oral history from his very personal perspective, but points far beyond his person through his activities and his numerous connections to the music scenes described. His (self) ironic and narrative supportive comments come from the off, except when Reeder can be seen on the historical footage himself. The stories are simplified representations from the experience of Mark Reeder, so they are not - as the opening credits claim - completely made up.

An essential feature of the film is the composition of a large number of different film material with just as different material qualities - news programs, experimental films, documentaries, concert recordings, amateur recordings, Super-8 recordings by shipowner and his environment, such as the filmmaker Knut Hoffmeister , as well as some re-enacted scenes with the Mark Reeder double Marius Weber - to a stylistic whole. Over 50 sources are listed in the credits. The specialty of this composition lies in the way the very integrative artistic film editing is done. The script is therefore conceived in terms of image content, image quality and especially the film editing of the historical material. This is unusual when processing documentary film material, but there is a parallel in the artistic radio feature of z. B. Walter Filz or Michael Lissek .
