The Archaeological Pilgrim Museum Globasnitz , also Archaeological Pilgrim Museum Hemmaberg-Juenna is a museum in the Carinthian municipality Globasnitz . It was reopened in 2006 after a renovation and is dedicated to the presentation of the late antique and early Christian finds from the archaeological excavations at Hemmaberg as well as from the Roman settlement and the Ostrogothic burial ground in the valley below. These are of great historical importance as they provide an insight into the otherwise "dark", i.e. H. Allow the elusive time of transition from late antiquity to the early Middle Ages . In 2014, the museum was the first in Carinthia to be awarded the Austrian Museum Seal of Approval by the Austrian department of the International Council of Museums . The seal of approval, limited to five years, was renewed in 2019.

The museum is open regularly from the beginning of May to mid-October.

History & organization

The first systematic archaeological research on the Hemmaberg took place in 1906 by Hans Winkler, a notary from Ptuj (Pettau) . After several decades of sporadic activity, systematic excavations have been carried out again since 1978 by Franz Glaser , the head of the department for provincial Roman archeology at the Carinthian State Museum . In the course of this, the full extent of the late antique pilgrimage site on the summit plateau of the Hemmaberges with its five churches could be captured. From 1998 excavations took place in the cemetery at the foot of the mountain, which could be dated to the end of late antiquity and shows a strong ost-Gothic presence after the end of Roman rule.

Increasing research activity resulted in the need to be able to present the finds locally. In 1982 the community made rooms available in part of what was then the primary school . After the primary school had been relocated to a new building, the old school building was adapted into a modern museum from 2003. This was opened in 2006. The conception is based on design guidelines that had been developed for the recently refurbished museum in Teurnia . The main theme should not be the objects sorted according to groups of finds, but the person behind them and their time.

The museum is looked after by the Globasnitz community in cooperation with the Hemmaberg-Juenna History Association and officially has the status of a “partner museum” of the Carinthian State Museum.

Conception

In the garden in front of the museum there is a covered lapidarium , which presents Roman grave inscriptions and reliefs from the area. Inside the museum consists of six exhibition rooms with different focuses. In the foyer there is the possibility to prepare groups of visitors with documentaries for the further course of the visit. In the adjoining room, some finds and skeletons from the late antique burial ground are exhibited in their original location. The visitor can also get information about anthropological research methods. The artificially deformed skulls of some individuals are remarkable .

On the upper floor, the developments of the place in prehistory and early history as well as the Roman road station Iuenna in the area of today's Globasnitz are examined. The rest of the exhibition space is dedicated to pilgrimages and the emerging veneration of saints in late antiquity. The everyday life of a traveler at that time should be made comprehensible. Furthermore, the development of the church group on the Hemmaberg is shown, where around the year 500 there were five churches next to each other. An important aspect is the possible parallel existence of Arian Christians and those who (unlike them) had accepted the Trinity as a principle of faith (cf. the Nicea Confession ). The grave of a donor from one of the churches is part of the presentation. It is also shown how conclusions can be drawn about the ritual practice of these early Christians from archaeological remains. The mosaics recovered from the churches and their motifs take up a lot of space .

A room on the mezzanine floor is dedicated to the recent veneration of saints on Hemmaberg on which, next to the Church of the eponymous Hemma of Gurk from the 15th century, also one of the holy Rosalia consecrated chapel in a cave located. Another room in the museum is available to the community for special exhibitions that change every year.
