history

The association was founded in 1844 under the name Historischer Verein für Kärnten . The first chairman was Gottlieb von Ankershofen . Thanks to numerous donations and inheritances, the association built up a collection that, in collaboration with the Natural Science Association for Carinthia, enabled the foundation of the state museum in 1884 . The building was constructed with the support of the Kärntner Sparkasse . Crown Prince Rudolf became the namesake . The museum was initially operated by the two associations themselves and only later passed to the Province of Carinthia .

In 1863, the association and the Natural Science Association for Carinthia took over the publication of Carinthia , which dates back to 1811 , the publication of which was threatened with discontinuation at that time. In 1891 the Carinthia was separated. Since then, the association has been the sole publisher of the humanities-oriented Carinthia I , while the natural science association publishes the journal Carinthia II .

In 1974 the association transferred its collection to the country. As a result, the association gave up collecting activities and now focused on publishing. He also endeavors to research and convey the history of Carinthia through excursions, grants and research awards.
