Wilhelm Neumann (historian)

Wilhelm Neumann (born June 24, 1915 in St. Johann im Pongau ; † March 19, 2009 in Villach ) was an Austrian historian with a focus on Carinthian regional history .

Life

Wilhelm Neumann had a doctorate in history. Having returned home after being a prisoner of war in the Soviet Union in 1947, he was denied a university career due to his earlier membership of the National Socialist SA . He first worked as a secondary school teacher . From 1955 to 1980 he ran the museum of the city of Villach on an honorary basis and founded the museum yearbook. From 1968 to 1990 he was director of the Carinthian regional archive . He was also editor of the regional historical journal Carinthia I from 1971 to 1990 . Neumann wrote around 280 articles and twelve books, including collections of articles.
