The Kärntner Landesarchiv is a public archive of the Province of Carinthia centrally located in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee . It was founded in 1904 as the state of Carinthia's own scientifically managed institute. Since then, the archives of the state have combined the records from the autonomous state administration (archive of the Carinthian estates), from the state administration and the archival collections of the Carinthian History Association. The archived material currently being stored is around 15 kilometers long. Since 1996 the material has been stored in a new building in accordance with the latest archiving requirements.

architecture

The special feature of the archive, which was newly opened in 1996, is its exemplary architecture . It comes from the draftsmen Horst Aichernig and Edwin Pinteritsch, who were awarded the contract in 1991 on the basis of an architectural competition. The building consists of the design elements cuboid , cube and ellipse . Three main components, the public area (auditorium, exhibition and lecture room, reading room), the semi-public area (administration, scientific service, restoration) and the non-public area (delivery, storage), are harmoniously assigned to one another. The various components are clearly differentiated from one another by their material and color design. Due to its air-conditioning construction, the storage facility for the archived material manages without air conditioning. The advantage of the building lies in the synthesis of architecture and functionality. As an "archive of short distances", the building supports all work processes as best as possible.

tasks

The main task of the Carinthian Provincial Archives is to preserve and make accessible the archiving documents of the Carinthian provincial authorities and agencies, the municipalities of the state and the federal agencies located in Carinthia. Since 1996, the Carinthian Provincial Archives Act has regulated the position and tasks of the Carinthian Provincial Archives, which have been outsourced from the provincial administration. Historical research is part of the archives' legal mandate. As a publisher, the archive publishes historical and regional studies and organizes or participates in exhibitions. At the request of state authorities, the archive prepares expert reports or provides information on historical questions. According to the Carinthian municipal code, the state archive is also responsible for designing the Carinthian municipal coat of arms.

Stocks

With regard to the external appearance, the holdings of the Carinthian Provincial Archive are divided into documents , manuscripts and files. There are also pamphlets and special collections. The bulk of the written material comes from the state administration, but numerous archives from other sources, including those of private origin, that are important for the history of the state are also kept. In terms of time, the material covers more than 1000 years of national history. The oldest document dates from the year 878, the most recent files taken over reach the present. In terms of content, the archive material is assigned to the following groups:

  • Archives of the state authorities
  • State Authorities Archives
  • District Authority Archives
  • Archives of the parishes
  • Archives of the judicial authorities
  • Archives of finance and mining authorities
  • Real estate tax and surveying archives
  • Rulership archives
  • Family and Fideikommiss archives
  • Monastery archives
  • Archives of clubs, associations, corporations, schools
  • Economic Archives
  • Estates
  • Anthologies
  • Newspaper archive

The archive material is publicly accessible subject to the general protection period of 40 years and special statutory provisions, particularly those relating to personal protection and data protection. More extensive research, which the Carinthian Provincial Archive carries out on request, depending on the time and human resources, has been required by the institute to charge interested parties since the spin-off due to legal obligations. The archives in the reading room of the Carinthian State Archives are freely available to all interested parties for their own research, to pursue private law, academic, local history, educational, journalistic, family history or other personal interests.
