Herbert J. “Hawk” Carlisle (* 1957 ) is an American military pilot and former general in the United States Air Force (USAF). From November 4, 2014 to March 10, 2017, he was in command of Air Combat Command (ACC), a major USAF command based at Langley Air Force Base , Virginia .

Previously, from August 3, 2012, he was in command of the US Pacific Command (USPACOM) with the Pacific Air Forces (PACAF), a main command of the USAF.

Education and career

Carlisle joined the Air Force in 1978 after graduating from the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs , where he had a bachelor's degree in mathematics , and after completing pilot training, served in various roles as an instructor until the mid-1980s. After his promotion to Major (1989), he served as an officer at squadron and squadron level during the 1990s , most recently as Colonel in command of 1st Operations Group at Langley Air Force Base , Virginia , between 1998 and 2000 .

As a pilot came Carlisle during his career to more than 3,600 flight hours in the patterns T-38 , F-15A / B / C / D and C-17A , in his time with the 4477th Test and Evaluation Squadron (1986-88) on the Soviet MiG-21 and MiG-23 . His additional training includes a master's degree in business administration from Golden Gate University (1988), as well as various training and further education among others in the Army War College (1997), at the Syracuse University (2002), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2005) and the George Washington University (2007).

In May 2005, Carlisle was appointed commander of the 3rd Wing of the 11th Air Force , which was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base , Alaska , and in that position was promoted to brigadier general in August of the same year .

In June 2007 he was transferred to the USAF headquarters in the Pentagon, initially for three months as Director, Operational Planning, Policy and Strategy, Deputy Chief of Staff for Air, Space and Information Operations, Plans and Requirements , then from November 2007 under promotion to Major General as Director, Legislative Liaison on the Secretary of the Air Force's staff .

From September 2009 on, he commanded the rank of lieutenant general of the 13th Air Force at Hickham Air Base, Hawaii, before returning to the Pentagon in January 2011 as Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Plans and Requirements .

On January 23, 2012, US President Barack Obama nominated Carlisle to succeed Gary L. North as PACAF Commander. The Senate confirmed the nomination on June 29, and the handover finally took place on August 3; Carlisle's promotion to general had been made the day before.

On November 4, Carlisle succeeded General Gilmary Hostage , who was retiring, as the ACC commander. On March 10, 2017, he in turn gave command to General James M. Holmes .
