Kurt Woisetschläger

Kurt Woisetschläger (born November 20, 1925 in Graz ; † August 13, 2012 there ) was an Austrian art historian , museum director and was considered a profound expert on the Baroque .

Life

Woisetschläger had to take part in the Second World War at the age of seventeen and began studying art history in Graz after being captured by the British. In 1953 he received his doctorate under Wladimir Sas-Zaloziecky with a dissertation on "The Judenburg carving workshop of the 18th century and their masters Balthasar Prandtstätter and Johann Nischlwitzer". Woisetschläger was involved in teaching at the Art History Institute of the Karl-Franzens University in Graz as early as the 1960s , and from 1979 as an honorary professor . From 1963 to 1987 he was director of the Alte Galerie at the Joanneum in Graz and in 1978 he curated the Styrian state exhibition on the subject of Gothic at St. Lambrecht Abbey . From 1967 to 2007 he was a member of the State Historical Commission for Styria .

Woisetschläger was married to the art historian Ingeborg Woisetschläger-Mayer, who died in 2005.
