Giorgio Ursi

Giorgio Ursi (born September 1, 1942 in Doberdò del Lago , † October 8, 1982 in Gorizia ) was an Italian track cyclist .

In 1964, Giorgio Ursi won the silver medal in the singles pursuit at the Olympic Games in Tokyo . His losing opponent in the semifinals, the Dutch gold favorite Tiemen Groen , later suspected that Ursi had been doped because, at the request of an Italian jury member, he was the only driver who did not have to go to the doping control. At the UCI-Bahn World Championships in 1966 in Frankfurt am Main , Ursi came third in the amateurs' single pursuit .

Ursi was of Slovenian origin and was originally called Jurij Ursic . After retiring from cycling, he worked as a mechanic. He was found dead in his apartment at the age of 40.
