Pilot ride

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A pilot ride , also known locally as a lifebuoy , is a special service in the taxi and rental car industry . With it, a passenger is brought to a location of his choice, usually home, in his own vehicle or with a rental car. This service is requested when the passenger is no longer able or willing to drive his car home, usually because he feels too intoxicated .

The pilot ride is a voluntary service by a couple of taxi drivers who spontaneously find each other by radio . Both meet with their taxi vehicles at the place of the order, often a pub or restaurant . One taxi driver drives the passenger home in his own vehicle, the other taxi driver follows in his taxi. After paying for the pilot's ride, both taxi drivers drive back to the place of passenger pick-up so that the “pilot”, the taxi driver who moved the customer's vehicle, can come back to his own taxi.

As a rule, double to triple the price of the fare displayed by the “pursuing” taxi is charged, but a fixed price can also be paid by agreement.

This service is problematic if the taxi driver driving the customer vehicle has an accident with the customer vehicle . The costs incurred by the customer here are usually not covered by insurance . It is questionable whether z. For example, for the benefit of "only" paying twice (instead of having to pay twice for the triple route, simply back), the ordering customer would also have the right to receive this service free of damage, or whether the customer is entitled to a claim for damages against the piloting driver . The entrepreneur's loss of earnings is also problematic if the pilot drives a taxi as an employee and does not settle the trip to the entrepreneur, but instead puts the pilot's wages in his own pocket, free of charge.

Pilot trips are often rejected by taxi drivers at times of high traffic due to the time required to start the customer vehicle and the required return journey. Passengers who, in addition to their own person, would like to have the car brought home, will have to wait for less busy hours in the deeper night until they are ready to do a “pilot” (short form).

"Nez rouge" service

In Switzerland , at the end of the year (December 1 to January 1), there is a pilot service for sponsoring social projects, the “ Nez Rouge ” service (French for “red nose”, pronounced “neh Ruhsch”). Here, teams of two people with a private car are piloted after ordering by telephone and perform this service free of charge. A donation given by the piloted guest as a completely voluntary consideration is made available to a regionally selected social project; the teams receive (besides the donation income) only small items from companies that support this project. This “nez rouge” service is not welcomed by the Swiss taxi industry.
