The Centro Alti Studi per la Difesa - CASD ( German  Center for Advanced Defense Studies ) is the command academy of the Italian armed forces . The 1949 CASD the company is located in Rome and reports to the Italian chief of staff immediately.

Tasks and organization

The CASD consists of three institutes and a training center:

ISSMI

The Istituto Superiore di Stato Maggiore Interforze (ISSMI) is a general staff academy at which selected staff officers complete the second joint part of general staff training. The first part takes place at the command academies of the armed forces in Turin ( Army ), Venice ( Navy ) and Florence ( Air Force ). Selected officers from the Carabinieri , the Guardia di Finanza and officers from other countries also take part in the ISSMI course . Since the ISSMI course is recognized as a Master ’s course by agreements with universities in Rome and Milan , a small group of civilian students also take part in this course. Although this mainly revolves around military topics, teaching content in the areas of politics , international relations , economics and general organization is also provided. Study trips to Germany and abroad are also important.

IASD

The Isituto Alti Studi per la Difesa (IASD) is an educational institution that nine-month courses for higher officers , ministry officials and selected civilians serving. Around a quarter of the course participants usually come from abroad. The first, two-month section of the course aims to bring the participants to a comparable level , especially in the field of international relations . In the second section, work is mainly carried out in groups and seminars, with the participants or groups of participants having to prepare written theses. Study trips are also planned here, including to industrial companies.

CeMISS

The Centro Militare di Studi Strategici (CeMISS) is a research institute for strategic studies as well as for general military and security issues, which receives its orders from the Ministry of Defense, the General Staffs of the armed forces and the armed forces and these in cooperation with civil universities and research institutes in the and abroad. In addition, it supports research projects by civilian bodies and individuals (e.g. doctoral students ) and promotes their cooperation with military institutions. Every year around 50 research projects are awarded to civilian bodies and several congresses are organized. CeMISS is also active as an editor . In the field of military historical research, the general staffs of the armed forces have their own specific facilities, which, however, often work closely with CeMISS.

CeFLI

Since 2013, the Centro di Formazione Logistica Interforze (CeFLI), the armed forces' advanced training center for logistics, has also been subordinate to the CASD . This facility, created in 2008, prepares staff officers for complex, cross-armed forces and international logistics operations and also formulates or updates the corresponding operational doctrine. From 2008 to 2013, this training center was directly subordinate to the General Staff of the Armed Forces.

history

The CASD was founded in 1949 to significantly improve the integrated command of the Italian armed forces. In recent years in particular, it has developed its training content beyond purely military topics and has opened up to cooperation with civil institutions. As part of an internal reform, the three above-mentioned institutes were created in 1997 (CeMISS, which has existed since 1987, was incorporated).

Since 1972 the seat has been the Palazzo Salviati , a Renaissance building from the 16th century on the banks of the Tiber , a few hundred meters south-east of St. Peter's Basilica . In the vicinity of the Palazzo and its gardens (especially on Via della Lungara designed by Bramante ) there are some important cultural institutions, including the Villa Farnesina and the Palazzo Corsini with the Accademia dei Lincei .

In Palazzo Salviati was until 1849 a papal archive and until 1943 the military school Collegio Militare di Roma . A special room commemorates the numerous fallen or particularly excellent graduates of the former school. The CASD coat of arms with the emblems of the four armed forces and the motto UT UNUM SINT (“May they be one”) can be seen in the Bergamini Hall of the Palazzo . The building with its gardens is a listed building .
