Hartung fights for TSV Bayer Dormagen , in 2012 he won together with Limbach and Wagner at the German team championships and finished fifth in the individual standings. In 2014 he won again with the team at the German championships .

Hartung has been studying sociology, politics and economics at the Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen since 2012 . In 2013 he was elected athletes spokesman for the German Fencing Association . Hartung has also been a member of the DOSB's Athletes' Commission since September 2014, and has been its chairman since February 2017. He is also a member of the supervisory board of the German Sports Aid Foundation.

He is the founding president of Athleten Deutschland eV After the challenges faced by the athletes' representatives in the DOSB in the years 2014 to 2016, the Athletes Commission decided to found an independent association that was independent of the DOSB to strengthen the interests of the athletes. Decisive for the founding of the association were the dissatisfaction with the doping scandal in Russia, the many cases of sexual violence in sport, the competitive sports reform with a strong focus on medals and the introduction of the anti-doping law. The volunteer spokesmen for the athletes felt overwhelmed by this development and saw the need to change the system and become more professional. Athleten Deutschland now has over 450,000 euros annually and employs three people.

The association fights for a German sports system that offers athletes the best conditions in the world to develop their athletic and personal potential and that respects them as people. He fights for athletes in all arenas and empowers them to shape the future of their sport themselves.

The organization aims to enable athletes to improve communication between athletes and institutions. Athletes Germany should represent the interests of the athletes vis-à-vis the associations, but also all other actors in sport, politics and society and further develop the legal relationship and the nomination processes between athletes and associations. The association has set itself the goal of promoting athletes, which enables athletes to embark on a competitive sporting career without having to fear disadvantages or existential fears and to campaign for fair and clean sport.
