Zoltán Schenker

Zoltán Schenker [ ˈzoltaːn ˈʃɛŋkɛr ] (born October 13, 1880 in Váradszentmárton (today Sânmartin ) in Romania ; † August 25, 1966 in Budapest ; also Zoltán Ozoray or Zoltán Ozoray-Schenker ) was a Hungarian fencer.

Zoltán Schenker comes from a village in the Kreisch area , which belonged to Hungary in 1880, but is now in Romania. Schenker's father was a Transylvanian Saxon and his mother was a member of the Hungarian nobility . Schenker was Protestant ( Augsburg Confession ).

Zoltán Schenker changed his surname to Ozoray in the course of the Magyarization , but in the Olympic result lists he is listed as Zoltán Schenker.

Schenker was a student of the Italian fencing master Italo Santelli . At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912, Schenker won the saber fencing title with the Hungarian team. In the individual competition he was fourth behind three teammates. Of the eight fencers in the final of the saber tournament, seven were Hungarians. Only the Italian Nedo Nadi on rank 5 was able to place between the Hungarians.

There were no Olympic Games in 1916, and in 1920 Hungary was excluded from the Olympic Games. At these Olympic Games in 1920 Nedo Nadi managed to become five-time Olympic champion.

Zoltán Schenker was the Hungarian foil fencing champion in 1922 and 1924. At the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924 he competed with both the foil and the saber. With the foil team he was third behind France and Belgium, in the individual competition he was eliminated in the preliminary round. In saber fencing, the Hungarian team lost to the Italians in the final, although Nedo Nadi was no longer there. None of the four qualified Italian fencers competed in the singles final with the saber, so the Hungarians won gold and silver. Zoltán Schenker finished fourth, just like twelve years earlier.
