Italo Santelli (born August 15, 1866 in Carrodano , Italy , † February 8, 1945 in Livorno ) was an Italian fencer who is considered the father of modern saber fencing .
Life
Santelli studied at famous Italian schools, including the Scuola Magistrale of Rome, and was appointed fencing master in 1896. In that year he moved to Budapest with his brother Otello, also a fencer, and his wife , where he had a son in 1897. In Hungary Santelli developed a new style of saber fencing that was more defensive and became known as the "modern style of Santelli".
He first demonstrated this style at the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris , winning the silver medal in saber fighting, while his teammate Antonio Conte won the gold medal. In the foil, however, he was only seventh.
As a fencing instructor he taught, among others, Aladár Gerevich and his own son Giorgio Santelli , who won a gold medal with the Italian saber team in 1920 .
