Törökbálint [ ˈtørøk̬baːlint ] (German Großturwall ) is a city in Hungary . A referendum in 2004 regarding the city survey was just negative, but since July 1, 2007 the town has been called the city .

The German name of the city comes not only from the fact that Hungary and the German-speaking countries - mainly Austria  - have a common history of several hundred years, but also from the fact that the place was originally a Swabian village, like many other settlements in Hungary.

Geographical location

Aerial view of Törökbálint

Törökbálint is about 15 kilometers west of Budapest , between Diósd (German Orasch ) and Budakeszi (German Wudigeß ), also Swabian settlements.

Törökbálint is directly connected to the M1 and M7 motorways and can be reached directly from the M0 .

history

Before the Hungarians took the land

The Avars lived in the area until the 1st century AD . These were replaced by the Romans. The history of the localities was given momentum by the expansion of the Roman military road. During the time of the attacks against the Romans, the inhabitants were also expelled, and the area was not settled again until the 6th century.

Arpad time

After the Hungarian settlement, Grand Duke Árpád gave the area to Prince Kond, whose son, Csörsz, had a castle built nearby. The German name of the village probably comes from their name Torbágy (Turobag) .

middle Ages

In the Middle Ages the city was called Török-Bálint. Bálint Török was a historical figure, poet and nobleman who owned lands in the area.

Recent history

In the 16th century the Jesuits received the village, who built many beautiful buildings in the baroque style. The village remained in the hands of the Jesuits until 1773. The areas that had been almost completely depopulated by this time were repopulated by Danube Swabians around 1700 , who quickly made up the majority there.

After the dissolution of the Jesuit order , Maria Theresa gave the areas to Josef Majláth, her chamber advisor.

Latest story

The first contacts to Budapest were made in 1884 with the opening of a railway line.

In 1900 the village was renamed Törökbálint. From 1912, a suburban railway ran between the capital and Törökbálint until it was closed after the war.

After the Second World War, many of the Danube Swabians who had lived here for centuries were forcibly resettled and became a minority.

Törökbálint today

Today Törökbálint is part of the Budapest agglomeration . More and more people moved from Budapest to Törökbálint. That is why in recent years the Spiegelberg on the outskirts of Törökbálint , which was once an orchard, has been completely built on.

The large companies located on the outskirts of Törökbálint and the many shopping centers stimulate the local economy and are the largest employers there.

Partnerships

The town's twin town is Süßen in Baden-Württemberg .
