Érd [ eːrd ] ( German Hanselbeck , Turkish Hamzabég ) is a town with county rights in the southwestern periphery of Budapest in Pest County . The historic town center on the Danube called Ófalu (Eng. "Altdorf") with a minaret of the Hamza Bey Mosque is small, compact and of a village character; Nevertheless, Érd is one of the larger cities in Hungary with over 65,000 inhabitants, and even one of the largest in terms of area.
history
Archaeological finds show that the area around Érd was already inhabited 50,000 years ago, the first mention of the settlement of Érd comes from the year 1243. The name can be traced back to either the Hungarian word "erdő" (forest) or "ér" (stream) .
After the fall of Székesfehérvár Castle , the Turks conquered the city in 1543, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire for almost 150 years . At that time, Érd was known under the name Hamzabég , from which the German name Hanselbeck is derived.
In 1684, Charles V. Leopold defeated the Turks near Érd and Hungary was subsequently liberated from the Turks.
traffic
Érd has six train stations on two railway lines and several expressway connections (motorways M7 , M0 , M6 , highways No. 70, No. 6). There are frequent intercity buses from Volán , most of which travel to and from Budapest.
Attractions
In addition to the minaret, the baroque style Catholic Church of St. Michael is also worth seeing. Most of the interior is in plait style. According to tradition, the "Hundeburg" (Hungarian Kutyavár ) was the hunting lodge of King Matthias Corvinus . Today only a few remains of it are preserved.

particularities
The width of Érd results from the typical Hungarian settlement in street villages as well as from the low building types, paired with very loose construction. In this respect, the structure is similar to American conditions. In contrast to vehicles, pedestrians can hardly be seen.
