The Bratislava – Komárno line is a branch line in Slovakia . It leads in southwest Slovakia through the flat Great Schüttinsel ( Žitný ostrov ), a river island, almost parallel to the Danube and connects the capital Bratislava with the mostly Hungarian-speaking cities of Dunajská Streda / Dunaszerdahely and Komárno / Komárom.

The line is the busiest single-track railway line in Slovakia.

history

The line was opened in two sections by two different companies: The first section was the Bratislava – Dunajská Streda section on August 23, 1895, the second section to Komárno was opened on November 17, 1896. These companies merged in 1903 to form the Pressburg – Komorn local railway .

The original terminus in Bratislava was the Bratislava-Nivy train station east of the old town (formerly Bratislava-Nové Mesto - not to be confused with today's train station). Since the 1980s, the train has ended at what is now the Bratislava-Nové Mesto station north of the old town.

Current rail operations

Today the line is single-track and only electrified in short areas in Bratislava and Komárno. Local trains run from Bratislava to Dunajská Streda and Komárno. Regional transport has been operated by RegioJet since March 2012 . They use various used railcars from Germany. In addition, one round of the locomotive is driven. Since September 2019, a double-decker train with a Siemens ER20 locomotive has been running to expand capacity . The DBz 750 wagons were previously used by DB Regio .
