Okoč (until 1948 Slovak "Ekeč"; Hungarian Ekecs ) is a place and a municipality in Okres Dunajská Streda of Trnavský kraj in southwest Slovakia .
geography
The municipality is located on the lower part of the Große Schüttinsel , a river island between the Danube and Little Danube , which is part of the Slovakian Danube lowlands . The Komárňanský kanál runs north and northeast of the village . Okoč is located on the national road 561 and is five kilometers from Veľký Meder and 33 kilometers from Komárno . The rail connection is via a stop on the Bratislava – Komárno railway line .
Administratively, the municipality is divided into the parts Okoč, Jánošíkovo na Ostrove and Opatovský Sokolec (incorporated in 1976, Apácaszakállas in Hungarian ). There are also a few small farms in the surrounding area, such as Asód , Dropie , Goľáš , Veľký Sek and Viharoš .
history
The part of the municipality Opatovský Sokolec is mentioned for the first time in 1221, while the main town is only traceable as Ekech in 1268 . Both places were in the Komorn County of the Kingdom of Hungary and the latter was part of the Komorn Castle estate. In both places the inhabitants were mostly engaged in cattle breeding and especially fishing, which is also shown on the municipal coat of arms.
After the break-up of Austria-Hungary, both places became part of the newly formed Czechoslovakia. 1938-45 they were again in Hungary due to the First Vienna Arbitration . In 1976 the two towns merged.
