Medveďov (until 1948 in Slovak "Medve"; German Weißkirchen , Hungarian Medve ) is a municipality in southwest Slovakia with 539 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in the Okres Dunajská Streda , part of the Trnavský kraj .
geography
The municipality is located on the Great Schüttinsel ( Žitný ostrov ), part of the Slovak Danube lowlands , directly on the left bank of the Danube . A road bridge over the river connects to Hungary ( Vámosszabadi and further Győr ). The center of the village is 26 kilometers from Dunajská Streda and 41 kilometers from Komárno .
Part of the Dunajské luhy landscape protection area is located in the municipality.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1252 as Medwe . The name is either a Hungarian corruption of the Slavic / Slovak word medveď (in German bear) or derived from a proper name. But even before the document was mentioned, there was probably a settlement that served to protect the Donaufurt. Contemporary documents even speak of two places called Medve . In the Middle Ages Medve was a royal estate, part of the estate of the Pressburg Castle , later it belonged to different noble families. In 1869 there are 682 inhabitants; In the 19th century there were still many water mills on the Danube.
The place in Raab County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1919 and then became part of Czechoslovakia. By the First Vienna Arbitration 1938-45 Medve came again to Hungary.
