Michal na Ostrove (until 1960 Slovak "Svätý Michal"; Hungarian Szentmihályfa ) is a municipality in southwest Slovakia with 1009 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Dunajská Streda , part of the Trnavský kraj .

The municipality is located in the central part of the Big Schüttinsel , part of the Slovak Danube lowlands . The municipal area is flat, with heights of 116  m nm to 121  m nm and rises like a wedge for a length of almost twelve kilometers from a point south of the Bratislava – Komárno railway almost to the bank of the Little Danube . The center of the village is at an altitude of 118  m nm and is ten kilometers from Dunajská Streda .

Neighboring communities are Horná Potôň in the west, Orechová Potôň in the east and Holice in the south.

history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1337 as Zenmihal and belonged to the following families: Orros , Keméndy (1553), Farkas , Batthyány and Pongrácz in the 19th century . In 1553, 12 porta are listed in a tax register , in 1828 49 houses and 355 inhabitants were counted.

Until 1919, the place in Pressburg County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia . Due to the First Vienna Arbitration Award , he was again in Hungary from 1938-45.

From 1940 to 1960 the place Čečínska Potôň was part of the municipality, since then it has been part of Horná Potôň.

According to the 2011 census, Michal na Ostrove had 915 inhabitants, including 692 Magyars, 175 Slovaks, 14 Roma, two Czechs and one German and one Croat; three residents were of a different ethnicity. 115 residents did not provide any information. 715 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 47 residents to the Reformed Church, 15 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, three residents to the Greek Catholic Church and one resident to the Evangelical Methodist Church. 47 inhabitants had no denomination and the denomination of 87 inhabitants has not been determined.
