Ohrady (until 1948 Slovak "Kerť na Ostrove"; Hungarian Csallóközkürt - until 1907 Kürt ) is a municipality in southwest Slovakia with 1,347 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Dunajská Streda , part of the Trnavský kraj .

Church in place

The municipality is located in the central part of the Great Schüttinsel , part of the Slovak Danube lowlands . The municipal area is flat and used intensively for agriculture; Smaller alluvial forests are only at the arm of the Little Danube , Klátovské rameno , in the north. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 114  m nm and is seven kilometers from Dunajská Streda .

Neighboring communities are very briefly Jahodná in the north, Horné Mýto in the northeast, Trhová Hradská in the east, very briefly Dolný Bar in the south, Kútniky in the southwest and Veľké Dvorníky in the west.

The place was first mentioned in writing as Kurth in 1252 , when King Béla IV donated it to the Bratislava Chapter, which operated a lucrative sturgeon catch here. Later the village belonged to the estate of St. Georgen . In 1720 there were two mills and eight taxpayers, in 1828 there were 75 houses and 547 inhabitants who lived off fishing, agriculture and livestock farming.

Until 1919, the place in Pressburg County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. 1938-45 he was again in Hungary due to the First Vienna Arbitration .

According to the 2011 census, 1168 inhabitants lived in Ohrady, including 1092 Magyars, 70 Slovaks and one Russian. Five residents did not provide any information. 1051 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 35 residents to the Reformed Church, 16 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, four residents to the Jehovah's Witnesses, three residents to the Evangelical Methodist Church and one resident to the Orthodox Church; one resident professed a different denomination. 34 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 23 residents was not determined.
