The Žilina – Rajec railway is a branch line in northwestern Slovakia leading through Okres Žilina . It runs from the town of Žilina on the Waag through the valley of the Rajčianka River between the Súľovské vrchy and Little Fatra mountains before reaching the small town of Rajec . In addition to both terminus stations, there are also stations in Bytčica (part of Žilina) and Lietavská Lúčka on the 21.3 km long route .
history
The first attempts to build a railway line in the Rajčanka valley were made in the 1880s. Today's railway line should be a part of the larger connection either from Sillein to Čičmany or via the Little Fatra to Deutschprobe / Priwitz . At first, for financial reasons, it was proposed to build a narrow-gauge railway to Čičmany, and in the end it was decided to build the railway line in standard gauge. The first concession was granted in December 1985, but construction did not begin until November 1898. The railway line from Sillein to Rajec was opened on October 10, 1899; the company took over the Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn . The construction cost 1,860,000 K . The attempt in 1911 to continue the railway line at least to Fačkov in the direction of Priwitz failed, as did another attempt in the 1940s.
Passenger traffic ceased on February 2, 2003, but resumed after two weeks. There are a few local trains running today. Freight traffic is also important.
