The ČD series 680 is a seven-part electric tilting technology - multiple unit of the Czech railway company České dráhy (ČD). Technically it corresponds to the Pendolino type from Alstom . The trains run under the brand name SuperCity Pendolino and represent the highest quality train type of ČD.

history

In 1995, ČD decided to introduce a high-quality long-distance train on the Berlin – Prague – Vienna route. The trains required for this were originally supposed to be supplied by a consortium consisting of the Czech rail vehicle manufacturers ČKD and Moravskoslezská Vagónka as well as Siemens Verkehrstechnik and the tilting technology specialist Fiat-Ferroviaria .

In June 2003 the first prototype of the Fiat successor Alstom was delivered. A few more teething troubles arose after that, which were resolved in a two-year trial phase. The series multiple units were delivered by 2005. Since the price for the trains was significantly higher than originally planned, only seven multiple units were purchased instead of the originally planned ten. The trains cost a total of CZK 4.5 billion (approx. € 180 million).

Since January 2005, the trains have been running in advance on the routes from Prague to Ostrava and Děčín . In January 2006, the trains had to be taken out of service again due to some serious technical problems. After the deficiencies have been remedied, the trains have been running on schedule since then.

In the summer of 2006, approval trips took place on the Vienna – Gmünd railway line in Austria and in the fall of 2006 in Germany.

The 680.003 was irreparably damaged in an accident in Studénka on July 22, 2015. Since the multiple unit is urgently needed for operational use, the vehicle is to be completely rebuilt except for the reusable bogies.

commitment

Since December 2005, the trains have been operating as the SuperCity Pendolino between Prague and Ostrava at approximately two-hour intervals . On the 358-kilometer route, which the train covers in less than three hours, a total of six pairs of trains ran in winter 2005/06, most of which were made up of two units. Since the timetable change in December 2006 to December 2009, two pairs of trains also ran between Prague and Vienna. A pair of trains also ran daily between Prague and Bratislava until December 2009 , but was discontinued due to low demand. The SuperCity Pendolino Sprinter has been operating between Prague and Třinec since June 12, 2009 . This had no stop between Prague and Ostrava, after which the train stopped in Bohumín , Karviná , Český Těšín and the final stop Třinec in the east of the country.

In the 2012 timetable, a train set as SC502 / 511 drove from Bohumin to Františkovy Lázně and back on Saturdays .

Currently (since December 2014) the SC-Pendolino network consists of the Františkovy Lázně - Bohumín (via Prague and Ostrava) and Prague - Košice, SK (via Ostrava) connections.

The Františkovy Lázně / Cheb - Prague section is served twice a day, the Ostrava - Košice route only once a day. On the main line from Prague to Ostrava there are 9 trains a day in each direction, 4 of which continue to Bohumín.

Since there are no high-speed lines in the Czech Republic, trains that are approved for 230 km / h currently only run at a maximum speed of 160 km / h. On the Olomouc hl.n. – Ostrava-Svinov section, it reached 132 km / h, the highest average speed of a flat train in the Czech Republic.

The railway company states the utilization of the trains at 70 percent, on weekends even close to 100 percent. Since these trains are ČD's only commercial transport operations, the company has to bear the losses entirely itself. These amount to approx. 500 million CZK (approx. 18 million €) per year.

Movie location

The ČD series 680 has appeared in feature films several times:

  • In various movies, scenes with track recordings of the ČD series 680 can be seen, for example in Hostel 2 .
  • In the James Bond film Casino Royale , Bond and Vesper Lynd meet for the first time on board a ČD class 680 train. In addition to the exterior shots, a longer dialogue can also be seen inside. However, it is suggested in the film that the train is traveling in Montenegro .
  • An extremely spectacular and long sequence of scenes from the boarding in the train station to the journey in indoor and outdoor shots to the detailed depiction of the crash of the train after it falls from a bridge can be seen in the film Wanted . For close-up and indoor shots, part of the train was recreated in the film studio in its original size on a rotating and tilting stage. The exterior shots of the accident are CGI products .
