Švošov (up to 1927 Slovak also "Šôšov"; Hungarian Sósó ) is a municipality in Okres Ružomberok within Žilinský kraj in northern Slovakia with 868 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
geography
The community is located in the valley of the Váh, on its right bank at the mouth of the Komjatná brook , between the Oravská vrchovina mountains in the north and the Great Fatra in the south. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 470 m nm and is 14 kilometers away from Ružomberok (road distance).
Neighboring towns are Žaškov and Komjatná in the north, Hrboltová (part of Ružomberok) in the east, Hubová in the south and Stankovany in the west.
history
The place was established in the second half of the 15th century on the territory of the Likava Castle . At the beginning of the 16th century the village was settled by the Wallachians. Mentioned by name is Švošov z. B. in 1572 as Szossow . In 1625 five Wallachian farms are mentioned in a register and there was a small mill. In 1784 there were 30 houses and 321 inhabitants and in 1828 63 houses and 437 inhabitants were employed in agriculture, forestry and rafting.
Until 1918, the place in Liptov County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. The Church of Seven Sorrows was consecrated in 1994, replacing the St. Matthew Chapel built in 1798.

According to the 2011 census, 825 inhabitants lived in Švošov, of which 807 were Slovaks, eight Czechs and one Russian. Nine residents gave no answer. 777 residents professed to the Roman Catholic Church, nine residents to the Evangelical Church A. B, three residents to the Greek Catholic Church and one resident each to the Orthodox Church and the Czechoslovak-Hussite Church. 21 residents had no denomination and 13 residents had no denomination.
