The castle Liptov ( Slovak hrad Liptovský alternatively Liptovský Starý hrad or Sielnický hrad ) is the ruin of the highest hilltop castle of Slovakia . It is located at an altitude of 993 meters in the Chočské vrchy Mountains on the border of the Ružomberok and Liptovský Mikuláš districts , northeast of Kalameny and northwest of Bukovina . The castle itself belongs to the Sestrč cadastral area of the Liptovská Sielnica municipality .

The first documentary mention goes back to the year 1262. Her main task was apparently the border guard, at times she was also the seat of the Liptov county named after her .

The castle complex is freely accessible today.
