The Okres Kysucké Nové Mesto is an administrative unit in the north of Slovakia with 32,890 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and an area of 174 square kilometers. It is the smallest rural okres in Slovakia. It borders the Okresy Čadca in the north and Žilina in the south and west.

The okres, located in the traditional region of Kysuce , is essentially only formed by the surrounding area within a radius of 4 to 8 kilometers from Kysucké Nové Mesto . It lies on both sides of the Kysuca River, which flows from north to south . To the west of the river are the Javorníky Mountains , and to the east is the Kysucká vrchovina mountain range .

A higher-level road, the state road I / 11 ( E 75 ), runs through the Okres on its way from Žilina to Čadca and on to Czech Silesia , parallel to the double-track railway line Žilina – Bohumín , along the Kysuca river.

Historically, the district lies entirely in the former Trenčín county (see also the list of historical counties of Hungary ). In the administrative structure of Czechoslovakia from 1960–1990 he was part of the Okres Čadca, within the Stredoslovenský kraj ( Central Slovak Regional Association ).
