Snežnica (until 1927 also "Snažnica"; Hungarian Havas - until 1907 Sznazsnica ) is a municipality in northwestern Slovakia with 1,055 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and is located in Okres Kysucké Nové Mesto , a district of Žilinský kraj and also in the traditional landscape of Kysuce .
geography
The village is located on the western edge of the Kysucká vrchovina mountain range in a narrow valley of the Snežnica stream ( Kysuca river ). The center of the village lies at an altitude of 404 m nm and is seven kilometers from Kysucké Nové Mesto and eleven kilometers from Žilina .
Snežnica has five named districts, but they are unofficial: Dúbravka, Hore Jarčie, Hôrka, Pod Vreteňom and Prúty.
Neighboring communities are Radoľa in the north, Žilina (Zástranie district) in the east, Teplička nad Váhom in the south, again Žilina (Zádubnie and Brodno districts) in the southwest and Kysucké Nové Mesto (Oškerda district) in the northwest.
history
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1426 as Szneznycz and initially belonged to the estate of the Strečno Castle , then from the 16th century until the end of serfdom that of Starý hrad . In 1598 the village had ten houses and a mill, in 1828 there were 40 houses and 309 inhabitants who were employed in forestry and agriculture as well as wire ties and shepherds.
Until 1918 the place in Trenčín County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.
population
According to the 2011 census, Snežnica had 987 inhabitants, including 946 Slovaks, three Ukrainians and one Czech. 37 residents gave no information in this regard. 857 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, nine residents to the Evangelical Church AB, three residents to the Brethren Church and two residents to the Orthodox Church; one resident professed a different denomination. 32 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 77 residents was not determined.
