history

The hilltop castle is mentioned for the first time during the reign of the oligarch Matthäus Csák as the seat of a manor, therefore it is ascribed to it that it was built around 1300. At that time, Strečno Castle consisted only of a fortified Gothic residential tower that protected the ford in Strečno . As a royal estate in the first half of the 15th century, the castle came into the possession of the queens Barbara and Elisabeth . In the years 1444-69 the castle was owned by the Pongrácz family from Liptov-Saint-Nicholas , after which the castle changed hands often. Among others, Johann Corvinus , Nikolaus and Peter Kostkovci, Johann Zápolya and the Dessewffy family were rulers of the castle. In the 17th century, the owners were Franz Wesselényi and the Löwenberg family. In his last years in the late 17th century, the castle was often a refuge for anti-Habsburg Thököly -Aufständischen so that the imperial army under Leopold I , the External mounting dragged and the castle itself damaged. Near the end of the castle was with his two-story palace , a Renaissance - bailey and three bastions one of the best fortified castles in the whole Považie region. Since then, only a ruined castle has risen above the Waag.

The walls were preserved at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1970 the castle was declared a national cultural monument and in 1995 the renovation work was ended, so that the partially rebuilt castle was accessible again.

In 1689, 45 years after his death, the almost undisturbed remains were found by imperial soldiers and in 1698 they were transferred to the crypt of the church in Teplička nad Váhom and there in 1729 in the newly built chapel of the Virgin Mary of Loreto. In 2009 the remains were burned by a mentally ill man.
