Povina (until 1927 "Povína"; Hungarian Gerebes - until 1907 Povina ) is a municipality in northwestern Slovakia with 1154 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and is located in Okres Kysucké Nové Mesto , a district of Žilinský kraj , and also in the traditional landscape of Kysuce .

geography

The municipality is located in the Kysucká vrchovina mountainous region in the west-east-extended valley of the Povinský brook , which flows into the Kysuca . With the exception of the immediate vicinity of the village, the municipality is mostly wooded with conifers and covered by brown forest floors. The center of the village is at an altitude of 375  m nm and is three and a half kilometers from Kysucké Nové Mesto and 14 kilometers from Žilina .

To the east of the main town is the listed settlement of Tatarovci.

Neighboring communities are Kysucký Lieskovec and Lodno in the north, Radôstka in the northeast, Lutiše in the east, Horný Vadičov in the southeast and Kysucké Nové Mesto in the south and west.

history

The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1438 as Povina and at that time it belonged to the Budatín estate . In 1598 there was a mill and ten houses here, in 1787 the village had 88 houses and 559 inhabitants. In 1828 there were 104 houses and 920 inhabitants who were employed in forestry, animal husbandry, wire ties, house workers, peddlers, shepherds and basket makers.

Until 1918 the place in Trenčín County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In 1930 there were a total of 30 basket makers in the village. After the end of the Second World War, the town was expanded and the inhabitants worked in industrial plants around Kysuce and in Ostrava .

population

According to the 2011 census, there were 1,145 inhabitants in Povina, of which 1,118 were Slovaks, seven Roma, two Russians and one each from Moravia, Czech and Ukrainian; one resident indicated a different ethnic group. 14 residents gave no information in this regard. 982 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, five residents to the Orthodox Church, four residents to the Evangelical Church AB and one resident each to the Brethren Church, the Evangelical Methodist Church, the Greek Catholic Church and the Congregational Church; one resident professed a different denomination. 42 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 107 residents was not determined.
