Západoslovenský kraj
The Západoslovenský kraj ("West Slovak District") was a territorial unit in the Slovak part of Czechoslovakia in the years 1960–1969 and 1970–1990 . Its area was 14,491 km² in 1978 and there were 1,660,030 inhabitants. The state capital was Bratislava , which had been an independent Kraj since 1968/1971, but remained the seat of administration. The largest cities in the late 1970s were Nitra (72,000 inhabitants), Trnava (62,000 inhabitants) and Trenčín (48,000 inhabitants). It bordered in the north on the Czech Jihomoravský kraj, in the east on the Stredoslovenský kraj , in the south on Hungary , in the west on Austria ( Lower Austria , until the end of 1971 also Burgenland ).
The area of the Kraj was mostly low ( Záhorie , Danube lowlands ), some mountains are the Little and White Carpathians in the west to northwest, on the border with Stredoslovenský kraj were z. B. the Strážovské vrchy , Vogelgebirge and Štiavnické vrchy and in Piešťany is the Inowetz . The highest point was the Rokoš mountain ( 1010 m nm ) in the Strážovské vrchy. The most important rivers were the Danube and the lower reaches of the March , Waag , Nitra and Hron .
At the end of 1990 the Kraj was dissolved. The Bratislavský kraj , Trnavský kraj , Nitriansky kraj and partly Trenčiansky kraj are located in the area today .
