The Okres Malacky is an administrative unit in the west of Slovakia km² with 74,661 inhabitants (31 December 2019) and an area of 949.46.

Geography and traffic

It forms the entire northern part of Bratislavský kraj and borders the Senica and Trnava districts in the north, the Okres Pezinok and the Bratislava districts Bratislava III and Bratislava IV in the south and the Gänserndorf district in Austria in the west, separated by the river March .

The Okres is one of the largest in terms of area and is also the westernmost in Slovakia. Most of the area is taken up by the Záhorská nížina lowland , more precisely its part Borská nížina . Typical for this region are blown sand together with the pine forest growing there. The eastern border is formed by the Little Carpathians ; there is also the highest point, Vysoká ( 754  m nm ). The March ( Morava in Slovak ) flows on the border with Austria , with an average discharge rate of 109 m³ / s at Moravský Svätý Ján. Longer tributaries of the March are the Rudava (45 km) and the Malina (58 km).

The D2 motorway ( E 65 , Bratislava – Brno) and State Road 2 run parallel to it . The other roads are state road 501 (Lozorno – Brezová pod Bradlom), state road 503 (Záhorská Ves – Malacky – Pezinok) and state road 590 (Malacky – Borský Mikuláš). There is a road connection to Okres Pezinok via the Baba pass ( 527  m nm ) in the Little Carpathians. There is only one ferry across the March to Austria between Záhorská Ves and Angern an der March . The double-track railway line from Bratislava to Kúty and Skalica is also important . The lines branching off in Zohor to Záhorská Ves and Plavecký Mikuláš are only of regional importance.

Historical administrative units

Historically, practically the entire area is in the former Pressburg County , with the exception of a small area in the far north that belonged to Neutra County (see also the list of historical counties of Hungary ). There was a chair district there called Malacka (German Malatzka), but it had different borders, while the southern part belonged to the chair district Pozsony (German Pressburg). Since the creation of today's district in 1923, the borders in the Little Carpathians and on the March have been stable. Initially, the district was nine municipalities ( Bílkove Humence , Borský Mikuláš , Borský Svätý Jur , Kuklov , Lakšárska Nová Ves , Moravský Svätý Ján , Plavecký Peter , Sekule and Šajdíkove Humence ) larger in the north, but by around in the south five municipalities ( Borinka , Marianka , Stupava , Vysoká pri Morave and Zohor ) smaller because they came to Okres Bratislava-vidiek . In the years 1923–28 and 1940–45 ( First Slovak Republic ) the Okres was part of the Bratislavská župa administrative unit (Bratislava County). In the administrative structure of Czechoslovakia, the district lost three municipalities (Bílkove Humence, Borský Mikulás and Šajdíkove Humence) in favor of the Okres Senica in 1949 and was part of the Bratislavský kraj (not to be confused with today's ) in 1949-60 . After the administrative reform in 1960, the district was dissolved and south of the line and including Gajary – Kostolište – Malacky – Kuchyňa assigned to the Okres Bratislava-vidiek , north of it to the Okres Senica; both were part of the Západoslovenský kraj . Today's Okres was set up in the now independent Slovakia in 1996 as part of the new administrative structure and assigned to the Bratislavský kraj.
