Záhorie is a military site in Okres Malacky , western Slovakia . It includes three military training areas: Záhorie , Kuchyňa and Turecký Vrch . Along with Lešť and Valaškovce, Záhorie is one of three military areas in Slovakia.

Runway of the Malacky military airfield

The area lies in the Záhorie landscape , geomorphologically in the Borská nížina (Záhorie and Kuchyňa military training area) and in the Little Carpathians (Turecký Vrch military training area) and covers 276.51 km². The main part extends roughly from Lozorno in the south and Malacky in the west to Senica in the northeast. The Turecký Vrch exclave is located southeast of the Jablonové municipality , the D2 motorway forms part of the western border of the military area.

To the west of the municipality of Kuchyňa is the Malacky military airfield ( ICAO code: LZMC) with the 2,487 m long runway 02/20.

The military area was established in the 1920s on the large estates of the Hungarian Pálffy family , and was not very accessible until 1989. In addition to the Czechoslovak Army and, from 1993, the Slovak Army , it was also used by German troops during the Second World War (see also the German-Slovak Protection Zone Statute ) and by Soviet troops during the Iron Curtain era . US Air Force aircraft have been active on military grounds since the late 1990s .

Furthermore, the Záhorie practice area is used once a year, usually in the first week of August, for a large international military vehicle and re-enactment meeting.
