Marianka (German Mariatal , older also Marient [h] al ; Hungarian Máriavölgy ; Latin Vallis Mariana ) is a community and at the same time the oldest Marian pilgrimage site in Slovakia. It is located on the western slope of the Little Carpathians , about 6 km north of the Slovak capital Bratislava . The municipality had the Slovak name Marianské údolie until 1927 and was called Mariánka from 1979 to 1993 .
According to legend, a hermit living here carved a statue of the Virgin Mary in 1030 and hid it in a hollow tree trunk as a result of the chaos of war. In the year 1300 a blind beggar is said to have found a spring in the forest with the help of a voice from heaven with the promise that he would be able to see again if he would wash his eyes with the water of the spring. He did so, was able to see again and immediately saw a statue of the Virgin Mary lying by the spring. He erected a wooden pillar on which he placed the statue, whereupon pilgrimages to the statue of Mary and the miraculous spring began.
On May 16, 1367, King Ludwig I of Hungary laid the foundation stone for the pilgrimage church of the Nativity of Mary and the place was given to the Pauline Order, who built a monastery next to the church. This is also the first documentary mention of the place. In the course of time the church and monastery were expanded, with a theological college being established in the monastery, which at times even had the right to award a doctorate.
In 1786 the monastery was closed by Emperor Joseph II and some of the valuable art objects were plundered. For many years the monastery was used as a hunting lodge by various noble families and fell into disrepair. It was not until 1927 that monks came to Marianka again with the Congregation of the Comforters of Gethsemani (abbreviated CCG), who, after various interruptions during the Second World War and the communist rule from 1990 to 2003, had again run the church and monastery.
The Gothic Church of the Birth of the Virgin was redesigned in Baroque style towards the end of the 17th century, which Prince Esterházy was responsible for. Next to the church is the former Pauline monastery, which was expanded in 1593, as well as the St. Anna chapel from the beginning of the 18th century.
A path with six chapels from the 18th century leads from the church to the Holy Well, a baroque domed structure from the end of the 17th century. A Way of the Cross was laid out on a slope above the Holy Fountain in 1930–1936 , the impressive life-size statues of which were made by the Kuttenberg carver B. Becka.
