Veľké leváre (to 1927 Slovak Velké Leváry ; German bulk Protect , Hungarian Nagylévárd , latin Magno-Levardinum ) is a community in the western Slovakia .
location
It is located in the Záhorie region in the Záhorská nížina valley on the bank of the Rudava river , about 7 km north of the western Slovak town of Malacky . Not far from the community are the Austrian border in the west and the Záhorie military training area in the east. In terms of transport, it is connected by the main road I / 2 and a train station on the Bratislava – Kúty – Břeclav railway line.
history
The place was first mentioned in 1377 (called Lever in 1380 ). It was set up as a border post. In the 16th century Croats and especially Hutterites (also Habaners ) came to the area. The latter gave the town its German name and lived in so-called Bruderhöfe (also Haushaben or Habanerhöfe ) with 35 adobe houses, a water-powered mill and a school. Most of the local Habanerhof is still there and was declared an architectural monument in 1972. Since 1744 the place had the status of a market town; but this was revoked again in 1803.
The proportion of Habaners was initially very high, but fell over the centuries. Around 1900, the municipality had only a small German population compared to the majority of the Slovak population.
traffic
The Drösing – Veľké Leváre ferry ran across the March until 1945 .
