Východoslovenský kraj
The Východoslovenský kraj ("East Slovak District") was a territorial unit in the Slovak part of Czechoslovakia in the years 1960–1969 and 1970–1990 . Its area was in 1978 16,179 km² and there were 1,356,066 inhabitants. The provincial capital was Košice . The largest cities in the late 1970s were Košice (190,000 inhabitants), Prešov (78,000 inhabitants), Poprad and Spišská Nová Ves (both 30,000 inhabitants). It bordered in the north on Poland, in the east on the Soviet Union ( Ukrainian SSR ), in the south on Hungary and in the west on the Stredoslovenský kraj .
The region of the Kraj was mountainous in the north; On the border with Poland there is the High Tatras , with the highest peak of the ČSSR - the Gerlsdorf peak ( 2655 m nm ), as well as the lower Spiš Magura and the long Lower Beskids . The Vihorlat volcanic mountain range is located in the Humenné area . The southeast is covered by the East Slovak Lowlands , where the lowest point was with a height of 94 m nm. Between the Hornád basin and the lowlands are the Slanské vrchy . To the west of Košice is the eastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains , Slovak Paradise and Slovak Karst . The watershed between the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea ran through the Kraj . Of the larger rivers, only the Poprad belongs to the catchment area of the Baltic Sea ; other rivers are the Slaná , Hornád , Torysa , Topľa , Ondava and Bodrog .
At the end of 1990 the Kraj was dissolved. Today the Prešovský kraj , Košický kraj and a small part of Banskobystrický kraj ( Revúca area ) are located in the area.
The district was divided into several districts ("okres"). Below is a table of the circles:
