Revúca (formerly also "Veľká Revúca" in Slovak; German Großrauschenbach , Hungarian Nagyrőce ) is a city in central Slovakia . It is located in the southern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains on the Muráň river , 42 km from Rožňava and 93 km from Banská Bystrica (road). Administratively, it is divided into the parts Revúca (German Großrauschenbach ) and Revúčka (incorporated in 1976; German Kleinrauschenbach ).

The place was first mentioned in writing as Nagy Reucze in 1357 . In the beginning it was a mining and agricultural settlement. The iron ore industry also developed from the 16th century to the 20th century. The city was first mentioned in 1557. In the 19th century the city was one of the centers of the Slovak national movement and the first Slovak grammar school was founded in 1862 (but closed again in 1874). Until 1918/1919 the town in Gemer and Kleinhont County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary , then it came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia .

The main attractions include the old and new buildings of the first Slovak grammar school from the 18th century or from 1871, the late Gothic Catholic Church of St. Lawrence, the Classical Protestant church and a Classical town house from 1819. In the vicinity there are two natural attractions ( Muránska Planina National Park , Ochtina Aragonite Cave ).

At the last census, the city had 13,466 inhabitants, of whom 92.12% were Slovaks, 4.14% Roma, 2.16% Hungarians, 0.56% Czech and others. 39.43% of the population professed to be part of the Roman Catholic Church, 19.77% to the Evangelical Church and 34.46% professed to be atheists.
