Muráň (until the 19th century in Slovak also "Podmuráň"; German Untermuran , Hungarian Murányalja - older also Murány ) is a municipality in Okres Revúca in central Slovakia .
It is located about nine kilometers north of Revúca south of the Murano plateau in the northeastern foothills ( Spišsko-gemerský kras ) of the Slovak Ore Mountains and is traversed by the Muráň river of the same name .
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1321, but a Moranalya (about "Muraner Schlossberg") is not mentioned until 1427 . The rest of the story is shaped by the respective rulers of the castle. The robber baron Matej Bašo , who was up to mischief in the first half of the 16th century, is notorious .
The ruins of Muráň Castle (mentioned in 1271 as castrum Mwran ) are located in the north on the mountains above the village, they burned down in 1702 and have been in ruins since then.
