Jelšava (German Eltsch or older Jelschau and Ilsau , Hungarian Jolsva or older Jólsva , Latin Alnovia ) is a town in central Slovakia in the Okres Revúca . It is located in the hilly foreland on the southern edge of the Slovak Ore Mountains in the middle Muráň valley, 11.5 kilometers from Revúca , 100 kilometers from Košice and 105 kilometers from Banská Bystrica .

history

The place was first mentioned in writing as Ilswa in 1243 , it was founded by German miners. After the decline of mining, handicrafts came to the fore, the proportion of German-speaking residents in 1930 was only 197 out of 3493 inhabitants.

Until 1918 the town in Gemer and Kleinhont counties belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia . She came back to Hungary for a short time from 1938 to 1945 through the First Vienna Arbitration .

Jelšava is located at the intersection of two second-order streets. The II / 532 leads from Tornaľa (connection to the 1st order road 16 ) via Jelšava mostly along the Muráň valley to Muráň , while the II / 526 branches off from the I / 16 in Kriváň and connects the town with Hnúšťa and Rožňava via several mountain passes .

The city has a train station on the Plešivec – Muráň railway line ; However, this has been without passenger traffic since 2011. Since then, the next connection has been in Plešivec train station, 22 kilometers away .

The nearest international airports are Poprad-Tatry (76 km by road) and Košice-Barca (96 km by road).
