history

The place Kameňany originated in the 12th century on the territory of the estate of the Gemer Castle and was mentioned for the first time in 1243 as Kevy . In the same year the Hungarian King Béla IV donated the property to the Bebek family . As early as 1273, the village became a small town, which among other things was allowed to elect its own mayor; due to disputes between two branches of Bebeks, Kameňany never became a town. In addition, there was a Franciscan monastery in the municipality in the Middle Ages. In the late Middle Ages, a total of seven villages and a castle developed from what was then the larger municipal area, now located above the village of Rákoš. In 1427 there were a total of 87 portals . After being devastated by a Turkish attack in 1555, the population at that time fell to around a quarter. In the 16th century some ironworks worked in the place. In 1828 there were 275 houses and 2,381 inhabitants who were employed in agriculture, as distillers, traders and shepherds. After this census, the population began to decline again.

Until 1918, the place in Gemer and Kleinhont County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia, or now Slovakia.
