Appearance and foliage leaf

Rhododendron mucronulatum grows as a deciduous, multi-stemmed shrub that can reach heights of 1 to 2 meters. The long, thin young twigs have sparsely scaly bark .

The alternate leaves arranged on the branches are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is 0.3 to 0.5 inches long. The simple, relatively thin leaf blade is 3 to 7 centimeters long and 1 to 3.5 centimeters wide, elliptical to elliptical-lanceolate with a blunt or wedge-shaped blade base and a pointed, pointed or blunt upper end. The spreading edge is whole or toothed. The upper side of the leaf is sparsely scaled, the brown underside of the leaf also has scales.

Inflorescence and flower

The flowering period in China extends from April to July. The flowers are almost terminal, individually or up to three in a shamrock inflorescence and open before the leaves spread. The bud scales are durable. The sparsely scaled flower stalk is 0.5 to 1 centimeter long.

The hermaphrodite flowers are almost radially symmetrical and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five scaly sepals are 0.5 to 1 millimeter long, hairless or sparsely hairy. The five pale reddish-purple, 2.3 to 2.8 inches long and 3 to 4 inches wide petals are fused funnel-shaped and hairy on the outside. The ten unequal stamens are slightly shorter than the corolla tube. The stamens are hairy at the base. The upper, five-chamber ovary is densely scaled. The bald stylus is longer than the petals.

fruit

The capsule fruit, which is 1 to 1.5 centimeters long and 0.4 to 0.5 centimeters thick when ripe, is cylindrical. The fruits ripen in China from May to July.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.

Systematics and occurrence

The first description of Rhododendron mucronulatum was in 1837 by Nikolai Stepanowitsch Turtschaninow in Bulletin de la Société Impériale des Naturalistes de Moscou , Volume 10 (7), page 155.

Rhododendron mucronulatum belongs to the subgenus Rhodorastrum within the genus Rhododendron .

Of Rhododendron mucronulatum there are about three varieties :

  • Rhododendron mucronulatum var. Ciliatum Nakai (Syn .: Rhododendron dauricum var. Ciliatum (Nakai) EHWilson ): it is Western on the Japanese islands of Honshu , northern Kyushu and Shikoku (only Ehime Prefecture) and the eastern Korea spread.
  • Rhododendron mucronulatum var. Maritimum Nakai : It occurs in Korea.
  • Rhododendron mucronulatum Turcz. var. mucronulatum (Syn .: Rhododendron dauricum var. mucronulatum (Turcz.) Maxim. , Rhododendron dauricum subsp. mucronulatum (Turcz.) Vorosch. ): It is found in northern China, western Korea , Mongolia and Russia's Far East only Widespread in the Primorye region. It thrives in birch and larch forests and on the edge of the forest in the Chinese provinces of Hebei , Jiangsu , Liaoning , Nei Mongol and Shandong .

use

Korean flower pancakes ("Jindallae Hwajeon")

Some varieties are used as ornamental plants (sometimes called the spiky azalea), such as 'Cornell Pink'. In Korea, the flowers are also baked in pancakes ("Jindallae hwajeon") and served in a punch ("Jindallae hwachae"), which is traditionally made during the Samjinnal festival.
