The Plešivec – Muráň line is a branch line in Slovakia . It runs from Plešivec on the bank of the Slaná through the valley of the Muráň river via Jelšava and Revúca to the Muráň municipality . It touches the Slovak Karst and the Zips-Gemerer Karst .

history

The local ore mining industry with the blast furnaces gave rise to the construction of a railway line in the Muráň valley. As early as 1865, the then owners of the industrial companies turned to the then Hungarian provincial government to build a railway and replace the carriage service, but this was rejected due to lack of money. The Murányvölgyi helyi érdekű vasút was not founded until 1890 , the actual construction officially only began in autumn 1892 and de facto in March 1893. After eight months of construction, the whole route was officially opened on November 21, 1893. The cost was 3,092,000 crowns .

After the First Vienna Arbitration Award in 1938, the railway line was split in two, as the new Czechoslovakia-Hungary border ran between the Jelšava and Chyžnianska Voda stations (now Lubeník). Therefore, the trains from Slovakia had to travel through Hungarian territory to reach the railway line: under these conditions the troop transport failed. Therefore, in 1940 the state railway of the now “independent” Slovakia began building the so-called Gemerer connecting railways to connect this and other divided railway lines in the Slovak Ore Mountains area to the rest of the Slovak network. This new railway line would arrive at Revúca station from Tisovec and at Chyžnianska Voda station it would leave this line in order to reach the Plešivec – Slavošovce line at Slavošovce, which is also divided . This project was not completed until the end of World War II and restoration of Czechoslovakia. Since the railway line could again be reached from exclusively Czechoslovak territory, construction was stopped in 1949 and has never been resumed since.

On February 2, 2003, passenger traffic was stopped, but this was reversed on June 15, 2003. Passenger traffic has been shut down again since May 1, 2011.
