Life

Bonfig was the son of Petrus Bonfig and his wife Elisabeth. From 1743 to 1748 he attended the Johann-Philipp-von-Schönborn-Gymnasium in Münnerstadt , headed by the Augustinian order , where he was also a consultor (elected in the assembly on May 7, 1747) and prefect of the Marian Congregation ( Congregatio Mariae Virginis de Consolatione) ) was. At the beginning of his high school years, Bonfig began composing fugues , arias , minuets and preludes and worked as an organist . He was probably also tutored by court conductor Jan Zach (1699–1773), because his music book, which he started when he was 13, contains two otherwise unknown piano pieces by Zach. One of his fellow students in Münnerstadt was Alexius Molitor , with whom he also made his religious vows (profession) on October 24, 1749 . At that time Bonfig took the religious name Cajetan ( Caietanus ).

He then moved to Oberndorf am Neckar as a novice , where he was also employed as an organist. From 1752 at the latest, Cajetan studied theology in Mainz , where he became one of the most important musicians of the monastery. On December 22nd, 1753 he was ordained a priest in Mainz . In the Augustinian convent of Mainz, he worked from now on as confessor , preacher , Terminarius and procurator .
