Vitanová (Hungarian Vitanova , Polish Witanowa ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 1,341 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Tvrdošín , part of the Žilinský kraj .
geography
The community is located near the border with Poland in the eastern part of the Oravská kotlina basin and the Skorušinské vrchy mountainous region , in the south the area merges into the Western Tatras . The river Oravica flows through the entire municipality . The center of the village is at an altitude of 700 m nm and is 15 kilometers from Tvrdošín .
Until 2004, the settlement and tourist resort Oravice , located eight kilometers to the south, belonged to the municipality, since then it has been part of the town of Tvrdošín.
history
In 1550 only one meadow ( pratum Vitanova ) was mentioned on the site of the present location , in 1552 a place under Wallachian law was created on the estate of the Arwaburg . In the village of Wytanowa there were two portals in 1588 , in the 17th century iron ore was mined in the municipality , but the village was so poor, mainly because of the anti-Habsburg wars, that only a few settlements were taxable.
In 1770 there were 319 inhabitants, in 1828 145 houses and 823 inhabitants.

According to the 2011 census, there were 1299 inhabitants in Vitanová, 1249 of whom were Slovaks and one Pole and one Czech. 48 residents gave no answer. 1,226 residents supported the Roman Catholic Church, six residents supported the Evangelical Church AB and two residents supported the Greek Catholic Church; two residents were of other denominations. 6 residents had no denomination and 57 residents had no denomination.
