Brezovica (German Bresowitz , Hungarian Brezovica ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 1,347 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Tvrdošín , part of the Žilinský kraj and belongs to the traditional Orava landscape .
geography
The community is located on the edge of the Skorušinské vrchy mountain range in the source area of the Trsteník brook , which flows into the Oravica in Trstená . The center of the village is at an altitude of 720 m nm and is four kilometers from Trstená and ten kilometers from Tvrdošín .
Neighboring communities are Trstená in the north, Liesek in the northeast and east, Vitanová and Habovka in the south and Zábiedovo in the southwest.
history
The place was founded in 1580 as Brezowicza on the occasion of the Thurzo family by a mayor under Wallachian law ; the first inhabitants came from the city of Trstená. The name is derived from the Slovak name for birch (Slovak Sg. Breza ). The village belonged to the estate of the Arwaburg and was devastated by a Polish-Lithuanian army in 1683, but was quickly rebuilt. In 1728 there were 884 inhabitants and in 1828 116 houses and 655 inhabitants who were employed in agriculture, animal husbandry and linen weaving.

According to the 2011 census, there were 1,304 inhabitants in Brezovica, 1284 of whom were Slovaks and a Magyar and a Pole each; three residents were of a different ethnicity. 15 residents gave no answer. 1293 residents confessed to the Roman Catholic Church and one resident each to the Evangelical Church AB and the Evangelical Methodist Church; one resident was of a different denomination. Two residents had no denomination and six residents had no denomination.
