Chochołów is a village with a school administration office in the municipality of Czarny Dunajec in the powiat Nowotarski of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in Poland in the Podhale region . The village is on Voivodeship Road 958 . The village is located between the Pogórze Gubałowskie and the Orawicko-Witowskie Wierchy mountain ranges about 7 km northwest of Zakopane and 2 km north of Witów . The mountain river Czarny Dunajec flows through the village. The neighboring towns are Koniówka in the north, Ciche in the east, Witów in the south. In the west, Chochołów borders on Slovakia ( Suchá Hora ).

history

The first settlers came in the middle of the 16th century. In 1592 Bartłomiej Kluska became the first mayor. During the first partition of Poland , Chochołów came to the Habsburg Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria in 1772 . This became part of the Habsburg Empire in 1804 . The most famous event in the history of the village was the popular uprising against the Austrian administration on February 21, 1846. The uprising was initially started by around 30 góralen from Chochołów, Ciche , Dzianisz and Witów . Under the leadership of the local teacher, Jan Kanty Andrusikiewicz , and another increasing number of Gorals, they conquered the tax offices in Chochołów and Witów and the customs office in Suchá Hora . Over 100 people were then imprisoned in Spielberg , Kufstein and Nowy Wiśnicz . In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy , Chochołów became part of the Second Polish Republic . After the German invasion of Poland , the place was occupied by the Wehrmacht in World War II and belonged to the Generalgouvernement until 1944 . From 1975 to 1998 Chochołów was part of the Nowy Sącz Voivodeship .

Attractions

There is a brick neo-Gothic church of St. Hyacinth of Poland from the 19th century. Most of the other buildings are made of wood and represent a unique ensemble of the original Podhalanie architecture. The village is therefore often referred to as a living open-air museum.

tourism

It is in Chochołów quieter than in the neighboring resorts of Zakopane and Kościelisko. The tourist infrastructure is nonetheless well developed. In a start red marked hiking and bike path from Chochołów over Ostrysz , Tominów Wierch , Trzy Kopce , Gruszków Wierch , Słodyczki , Pałkówka to Gubałówka .
