Melville on the movie

“Before I loved the cinema, I loved the circus. I had kept a friendship from this love: the clown Béby, who was the greatest living clown at the time and whom I later owed admiration through a short film by Bresson ... To pass my test, I decided to make a short film with him . We are in 1947 and I still had Agfa film that I bought in 1942 ... We shot in silence and a stenographer accurately wrote down what Béby said in his number. But once in the broadcasting room, we noticed that he couldn't read and he had to be dubbed word for word. "
