action

Michel Maudet is a young boxer whose contract is terminated after another defeat. At the same time, the banker Dieudonné Ferchaux learns that he is about to be arrested for various crimes from the colonial era. Before he flees to the USA, where he has deposited his fortune, he is looking for a bodyguard. Michel applies and gets the job, the two travel to the USA together. Once there, Ferchaux learns that his assets have been blocked and that he is to be expelled from the USA.

The two now want to travel south in a rented car. During the drive, during which they are constantly being watched by the FBI , Michel is constantly looking for an opportunity to rob the old man and leave.

In the end they get to New Orleans, where Ferchaux, who is not happy with the climate, falls ill, so that Michel has to take care of him despite the constant psychological terror he has given him. Annoyed by it, Michel goes into town one evening, gets drunk and hooks up with a dancer.

At some point the local bartender, in whose bar Michel has often been to, suggests that they murder and rob Ferchaux together. However, Michel decides to carry out the plan alone. When Ferchaux realizes what Michel is up to, he has a heart attack. Michel goes to the dancer, but gets a remorse and returns.

Back at the villa, he can put the bartender and his accomplices to flight, who in turn try to rob Ferchaux. Ferchaux is fatally injured with a knife and dies in Michel's arms.

Reviews

“The elegiac Desperado story is one of Melville's most beautiful films; the structure is clear and concise, the staging laconic and dense, the figure drawing is remarkably differentiated. "

"This intelligent and neat work of art does in fact leave us completely indifferent."

- Le Monde

“'L'Aîné des Ferchaux' is Melville's first color film, his third and last with Belmondo, his most contemplative, personal, and least 'icy' film. At the same time a 'road movie' that evokes Melville's dream of the myth of America, and a story reminiscent of Hawks ('Red River') about father-son conflicts, male friendship and betrayal, truth and lies, courage and cowardice. "

Trivia

In 2001 a remake of the film was shot for French television, directed by Bernard Stora , in which Jean-Paul Belmondo plays the role of Paul Ferchaux. Samy Naceri has the role of the young Mike Maudet in this film.
