Eve and the Priest (original title: Léon Morin, prêtre ) is a French film from 1961 . Directed by Jean-Pierre Melville . Assistant director was Volker Schlöndorff , who also appears briefly.

content

The film is based on the story Léon Morin, prêtre by Béatrix Beck and takes place during the German occupation of France . The communist Barny, a widow and mother of a "half-Jewish" daughter, would like to have her baptized Catholic to protect her from persecution. In preparing for baptism, Barny comes close to Pastor Léon Morin. Léon can counter the doubts of the staunch atheist Barny with theological arguments. Barny decides to prepare for baptism.

reception

In 1963, at the start of the film in German cinemas, the FSK made considerable cuts in the original, as the religious sentiment of large sections of the population would be injured. The scenes in which the protagonist falls in love with the priest and a game takes place between the two that brings the clergyman into borderline situations were criticized. Likewise, the graduation scene had to be canceled, as Barny had not shown any remorse at that point. Even before the FSK checked, the lender had all references to the German occupiers removed, as the scenes were poor in action .

The first performance of the reconstructed German version took place on March 29, 1991 on ZDF.

On the recommendation of the priest, Barney reads the biography of Jesus by the theologian Karl Adam , who held a chair in the NS and then a chair in Tübingen. James Clark draws the conclusion that Léon Morin himself comes from the Tübingen school and with a reference to Heidegger he goes into the fascination of right, nonconformist thinking.

A French remake , directed by Nicolas Boukhrief , was released in 2016 under the title Confession .

criticism

“A mature, serious work that also knows how to master difficult questions convincingly; Still worth seeing and discussion, although the original version has been shortened by almost a quarter and the German rental synchronization made further changes. "

Eve and the priest stand out as a singularity from the work of the Jewish atheist Melville, as Melville's cool, dystopian noir thrillers like The Ice Cold Angel and Four in the Red Circle have made their way into film history as the godfather of the nouvelle noir crime thrillers registered. "

JE Smyth criticizes the fact that the role of the church in occupied France is idealized. The immobilization of dissident women is discussed as a further storyline. While the author of the template was active in the resistance, the protagonists are passive and the men return to the woods to fight.
