Sobreira Formosa is a vila (small town) and municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Proença-a-Nova . It has 1698 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
The place received its first town charter ( Foral ) in 1222, under its then name Vila Nova ( Portuguese for: new small town). The place owed this to an illegitimate daughter of King Sancho I , who gave her this area. King Manuel I renewed the city rights of Vila Nova in 1510. The place name Vila Nova , which occurs frequently in the country, was later changed to Sobreira Formosa (Portuguese for: beautiful cork oak). In 1855, the previously independent district was dissolved and Proença-a-Nova was incorporated.
Culture and sights
The community has six protected architectural monuments (as of January 2013). In addition to the nursing home Centro de Dia da Misericórdia de Sobreira Formosa and a fountain, there are four sacred buildings , including two chapels, the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Sobreira Formosa (also Igreja de São Tiago Menor ), and the one built in 1558, in the 18th century redesigned, single-nave Igreja da Misericórdia de Sobreira Formosa (Eng .: Church of Mercy of Sobreira Formosa). The Mannerist church contains late baroque altarpieces .
With Figueira heard one of the villages on the route Aldeias do Xisto to municipality. Hiking trails of this route of the traditional slate villages, also advertised nationwide, run through the municipality of Sobreira Formosa. In addition, the community u. a. on the river pool Praia Fluvial de Fróia .
