Józef Karpiel (born January 18, 1932 in Kościelisko , † November 29, 1994 in Zakopane ) was a Polish Nordic combined athlete .

Career

Karpiel, who was the son of Olympian Stanisław , celebrated international success as a junior. For example, he was third in the combined competition of the Czech Marusarzówna Memorial at the end of March 1952 in Zakopane . He was also successful at the tenth academic World Winter Games in Semmering in 1953 by winning the bronze medal in the 4 × 10 km relay. In 1954 he was the first Polish champion with the relay of his club WKS Zakopane . In January 1957, behind Josef Schiffner , Karpiel narrowly missed victory in the Nordic ski competitions in Le Brassus, finishing second .

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1958 , Karpiel finished 31st. In January 1960 Karpiel reached third place behind Bengt Eriksson and Alois Leodolter in the Nordic ski competitions in Le Brassus. About a month later he took part in the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley , where he served as the flag bearer of the Polish Olympic team. In the competition on the normal hill and over 15 kilometers, he reached 19th place. At the beginning of March he became the first Polish champion in Nordic combined.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane in 1962 , he finished 26th. A few weeks later he won the combined competition of the Czech Marusarzówna Memorial in front of Erwin Fiedor and Franciszek Gąsienica Groń . It was his first win in this competition series, having finished third four times between 1952 and 1958.

He was married to the skier Bronisława Marusarz , with whom he had two daughters and a son.
